Pyrometallurgist – Metal Waste Recycling & Induction Melting
On-site
Steel Cleanup
Job Description
At SCW Systems -division Steel Cleanup-, we are at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the metals and materials sector. Our mission is to develop next-generation processes that enable circular use of industrial residues and critical raw materials. We work across cutting-edge domains including hydrometallurgy, waste valorization, electrochemical recovery, and clean process engineering.
To support our growing pipeline of clean-tech solutions, we are seeking a skilled and hands-on Pyrometallurgist with a strong background in field recycling of metal waste, specifically from cutting and machining stations.
Your Role
The ideal candidate will have experience handling stainless steel materials (e.g. 316-grade) and be capable of identifying and applying the appropriate fluxes to remove impurities during melting. You will play a critical role in optimizing our induction melting furnace operations, improving metal recovery, and ensuring high purity recycled outputs.
Key Responsibilities:
Evaluate, classify, and process metal waste from cutting operations (chips, fines, contaminated offcuts)
Design and optimize flux addition strategies for impurity removal (e.g. oxides, slag-formers, tramp elements)
Operate and monitor induction melting furnaces for stainless steel, especially AISI 316-type grades
Support lab-scale and industrial-scale melting trials
Work closely with operations to improve metal yield and cleanliness
Contribute to R&D projects focused on sustainable metallurgical recycling
Analyze slag, melt chemistry, and off-gas data to guide process decisions
What this opportunity offers you
A dynamic, sustainability-driven work environment
Opportunities for process innovation and technical leadership
Become a specialist in this field and lead recipe making for the production
Career development in a fast-growing recycling and specialty metals company
Who or what is SCW?
SCW Systems has been around for over 12 years. We are a young and fast-growing company. With a team of more than 100 colleagues, we develop innovative and impactful technologies: Steel CLEANUP, CO₂ CLEANUP, and Supercritical CLEANUP.
In recent years, SCW Systems has grown rapidly and is now evolving from a Dutch scale-up into an internationally operating organization. We are in a crucial growth phase, driven by our core values: impact, collaboration, urgency to act, and a strong belief in the power of solutions.
This is what we are looking for:
A Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in one of the following fields: Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mining Engineering. A Master’s or PhD is a strong plus. Especially for roles involving R&D, innovation, or academic collaboration.
Preferably a specialization in extractive metallurgy, process metallurgy, thermodynamics, or high-temperature materials.
3–5 years of hands-on experience in pyrometallurgical metal recycling.
Proven experience with:
Handling and recycling 304/316 stainless steel or Cr-Ni based alloys.
Using fluxes to remove impurities such as phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), or oxides during melting.
Reducing Cr-based oxides and identifying optimal pathways for melting.
Operating induction melting furnaces.
Practical understanding of slag-metal interactions and optimizing alloy recovery.
A hands-on mindset; comfortable working in both laboratory and industrial environments.
Fluent in English; additional languages are a plus.
