Process Engineer

  • On-site
  • Supercritical Cleanup

We are looking for a (medior/ senior) Process Engineer for our SuperCritical CleanUp (SCC) division.

Job Description

Take a key role in developing groundbreaking technology that truly makes an impact

SCW Systems is the international market leader in supercritical water gasification. In Alkmaar, we operate the world’s first industrial-scale facility with a capacity of 10 tons per hour. This innovative technology allows us to efficiently convert waste streams into green gas, green hydrogen, and clean water. In 2023, we achieved a global first by demonstrating this technology successfully at industrial scale.

We are looking for a (medior/ senior) Process Engineer for our SuperCritical CleanUp (SCC) division to take an active role in the technical development, scale-up, and international deployment of our technology. This is your chance to join an innovative and intrinsically motivated growing team. Exceptionally well-qualified candidates will be considered for a senior role.

What is SuperCritical CleanUp (SCC)?

SCC is the SCW division responsible for developing and deploying our pioneering supercritical water gasification technology. With our innovative technology we transform waste streams and polluted wastewater streams into renewable gas and clean water. The world’s first industrial demonstration plant in Alkmaar was developed, built, and commissioned by the SCC team. This included all stages of the continuous process, from pre-treatment and gasification to high-pressure gas treatment (syngas to on-spec green gas) and water treatment.

Your role as Process Engineer

As a Process Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on maintaining, improving operational processes and roll-out of the SCC technology. Your focus is on water treatment, pre-treatment and gas-treatment. You combine technical expertise with a hands-on approach and contribute to both day-to-day operations and the long-term technology development. Exceptionally well-qualified candidates will be considered for a senior role

Your responsibilities include:

  • Designing process equipment such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and reactors

  • Creating design documentation such as P&IDs, Heat & Mass Balances, and functional descriptions

  • Specifying and selecting new process equipment, including technical evaluation of supplier quotations

  • Preparing and coordinating test plans

  • Performing root cause analyses (RCA) and translating findings into technical improvement proposals

  • Actively contributing to commissioning and optimization of systems

  • Participating in HAZOP sessions and performing follow-up studies such as LOPA and SIL verification

What this opportunity offers you

  • A tangible and hands-on contribution in the development and roll-out of a truly innovative and impactful technology

  • The chance to contribute to technological solutions that make a real difference for the climate and environment

  • A dynamic and innovative working environment where collaboration, impact, and problem-solving are key

  • A positive and driven workplace culture focused on teamwork, purpose, and shared achievement

  • Competitive employment conditions and participation in our Long Term Incentive Plan, allowing you to benefit from the value growth of the company

This is what we are looking for:

  • You have a completed Bachelor's (HBO) or Master’s degree in Process or Chemical Engineering.

  • You have at least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in process engineering or the (petro)chemical industry.

  • You have experience with performing process calculations and working with process simulation software (such as Aspen, Unisim, Symmetry, or Pro/II).

  • You have knowledge and experience in system qualification and process validation.

  • You are familiar with performing process safety calculations (e.g. relief valves, rupture disks).

  • You have experience conducting HAZOP and LOPA studies.

  • You collaborate easily across various disciplines (mechanical, instrumentation, electrical) within the organization.

  • You are fluent in both Dutch and English.

  • You have a good command of Microsoft Office applications.

Key competencies:

  • Problem-solving mindset

  • Planning, organizing, and monitoring progress

  • Helicopter view and systematic thinking

  • Easy interaction with colleagues and external suppliers

  • Proactive attitude and flexible mindset
